In a recent statement, the Digital Freedom Coalition expressed deep concern over the government’s plans to ban social media platforms without proper legal procedures or stakeholder consultation. The coalition, comprising 11 prominent civil society organizations, warns that such actions could severely undermine citizens’ rights to freedom of expression and access to information.
The coalition emphasizes that social media platforms are vital for democratic dialogue, civic engagement, and the digital economy. Banning or restricting these platforms could lead to widespread negative consequences, including economic disruptions to small and large businesses, increased censorship, and the erosion of democratic values.
They advocate for transparent, inclusive legal frameworks that respect both Nepal’s constitution and international commitments. The coalition urges all stakeholders: government, platform owners, and civil society In order to collaborate in creating a free, open, and inclusive digital space.
As Nepal faces these critical decisions, the message is clear: protect digital rights, uphold democratic principles, and ensure that actions are carried out with transparency and accountability.
